Are you a practicing physician or resident/fellow looking for a new job?
Don’t go into your job search blindly!
Check out our tips, tricks, and advice on how to nail this job search season!
- Create a job search-specific email address that you’re comfortable sharing with recruiters and the like. You will receive an influx of emails surrounding your job search, and you’ll want to be able to separate them from your personal and/or work emails.
- Start your job hunt early. 1 to 1.5 years is our suggested lead time for you to start exploring opportunities.
- Virtual career fairs and alumni events are great places to start networking! After all, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Physician-specific job boards are also a good place to get a feel for the job market, but be cautious as there is a lot of clutter and misinformation on those sites which could set unreasonable expectations.
- A quality recruiter is a great resource to learn about market trends! They often represent clients from across the country and have access to accurate information and real-time data, so don’t be afraid to reach out to a reputable physician recruiting agency.
- Common Misconception: You will have a job lined up with your program after training. The perfect job fit isn’t always so easy to find!
- During interviews, YOU should ask the questions – make sure you would be comfortable signing a contract! It’s not just a job, it’s a life change. Get input from your family, friends, and colleagues, and don’t ignore those gut feelings.
- Though some organizations will do multiple interviews, do not be surprised if an employer prefers to set up a single comprehensive onsite interview over one or two days.
- Our suggestion: Try to interview with 2-5 organizations that meet your criteria around the same time so that you can do all your negotiations within the same timeframe.
- Do your research beforehand about the organization that you’re interviewing with! If you’re nervous about what kind of questions will be asked of you during an interview, try googling common questions for your specialty! Reddit and Glassdoor can be helpful resources for preparing you for those stressful “What would you do in this scenario..?” questions.
- Most importantly, treat everyone you meet with respect! Be polite during your interviews and act as if every opportunity is the job you want – you never know what kind of doors will be opened to you!
