What does the future hold?

All signs point to significant changes coming to the healthcare industry and soon.  Here are a few key markers that indicate change is on the way:

Intermountain Healthcare, Ascension, SSM Health and Trinity Health are working together to create a generic-drug company
Amazon, JPMorgan Chase, and Berkshire Hathaway announced a place to cut out the middlemen in hopes of providing more affordable healthcare coverage for their employees
– More and more family medicine practices are expanding their hours and appointment offerings to compete with the ever expanding Urgent Care market.

“One thing is certain, healthcare is becoming part of the larger economy,” said Ben Isgur, leader of PricewaterhouseCoppers Health Research Institute.

Expect to hear of more partnerships soon.  Some of these partnerships will likely be a mix of companies both within and outside the industry.

It seems the consumerization of healthcare is on the horizon and the giants of the industry will no longer be able to have their will and way.  PWC recently published an article titled. “Top Health Industry Issues of 2019” and provides excellent insight into what lies ahead.

At the conclusion of 2019, it will be interesting to see what has changed and what has stayed the same.  With that, we know the healthcare industry is a large ship and will take years to turn, but the course is being charted and new territories explored.
